Important Stuff

What is counselling?

It’s a safe and confidential space for you to talk to someone who will not judge, but listen.  Counsellors are trained to work with their clients in order to empower change in thinking, which connects to emotions and behaviors.

How long does it last?

Typically each session is 60 minutes to allow sufficient time, maximizing the therapeutic effect and learnings.  Longer sessions of up to 90 minutes are optional, by request. Noticeable changes should start to become apparent over 6-8 weeks.   We then review changes to goals and reflect on learnings and skills built.  Sometimes homework is provided to work on strategies learned in session.

How much does it cost?

This is an investment of $220 per session (inclusive of GST).  About the same as a good haircut or a healthy massage.

Do I get Medicare Rebates?

Unfortunately no.  This is only available via a Doctor’s referral to a psychologist or mental health social worker under a Mental Health Care Plan.  However, it is often around the same price, after the rebate and often clients do not want their mental health plan recorded on their medical records.

What about Private Health Funds?

Yes, Positive Minds is an approved provider for BUPA, Medibank Private Health Fund and NSW SIRA (State Insurance Regulatory Authority).

I’m nervous – I don’t know where to start.

That’s absolutely fine.  It’s normal to feel nervous.  We usually have a chat on the phone first, to work out what is required, if / how I can help, and if you feel comfortable enough.

What happens at our first session?

The most important thing here is to establish a good relationship and that I can help you with your needs.  We will discuss symptoms; a brief history and your back-story; what it is you want to gain from these sessions; why you picked up the phone; and work out a treatment plan that works the best for you.

Confidentiality

Is important.  We discuss this in great length in our first session, or on the phone.

No question is a silly question.

Email or call me if you have any more questions.
